HOME MEETINGS
Read and pray: “Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:37,38)
When we preach the gospel to sinners, we must reach mainly their conscience. It is not adequate that we only teach their mind to know God, to understand the Bible and the gospel. The best and most effective way to preach the gospel is to touch the conscience of the sinner, because the conscience is the main part of the human spirit.
When we touch a person’s conscience, we touch their spirit. For this reason, when we preach the gospel, we must do it with the power of conviction, to convince them and cause them to have conviction in their conscience. Then, when their conscience has been touched, they begin to repent, to mourn, and sometimes even to cry.
We cannot teach people to mourn in their mind; we must touch their conscience. The conscience is the main functioning part of our human spirit, and when we exercise it, we exercise our spirit. When we pray, repent, and speak to the Lord, we exercise our spirit.
When we do this, immediately the Holy Spirit enters into us. This is the only way to touch the Holy Spirit, the consummated Spirit as the very consummation of the Triune God. But this principle has been neglected by many and has been lost among today’s Christians.
Some think that the best way to receive the Spirit is to pray and pray. This is correct. The best way to touch the Spirit is to pray, but one must pray with a proper understanding. Pentecostals always teach people that they must fast, pray, and wait for God so that something happens suddenly. Then they receive the Holy Spirit.
They say that the best way to receive the Holy Spirit is to move the jaw and change the tongue to express something in a strange voice—that is, to speak in tongues. I have tried many different ways, but I must tell you that the biblical way is to pray in your spirit.
You do not need to wait, and you do not need to move your jaw or change your tongue; you only need to pray in your spirit. If you do this for just one minute, you will touch the Holy Spirit.
It is easy to turn on the electricity in this building; you just need to touch the switch. Suppose you kneel down, begging and praying: “Dear electricity, please come to me. I am waiting for you. Don’t you know? Answer me. Please come!” If the electricity could speak, it would say, “Fool, why don’t you touch the switch?”
Every morning you must pray, not only to ask the Lord to give you a good day, but to open again in your spirit. Open your spirit to the Lord: “Thank the Lord.” Sometimes you only need to say: “Thank the Lord. Thank You that I can have contact with You here.”
You can say: “Thank the Lord. Thank You that Your blood cleanses me. Thank You, Lord, that You are with me.” When you do this, you need to sense that deep within you—that is, in your spirit—you are touching the Lord, touching the Spirit. We all know this, yet many times we pray so many things that distract us from touching the Spirit.
