KNOWING THE BIBLE
Read and pray: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (Jn 6:63)
God is Spirit. The Spirit, however, is very abstract. He is as abstract as the radio waves in the air. It is difficult for man to touch Him or understand Him. But the Bible is the embodiment of this Spirit. The Lord Jesus said in John 6:63 that the words He speaks are spirit. This shows us that the word of God is the embodiment of the Spirit of God.
It is like a radio receiver picking up the radio waves in the air; the radio receiver becomes the embodiment of the radio waves. When the radio waves are in the air, we do not hear them, touch them, or understand them. As soon as they are picked up by the receiving device, the radio waves are manifested before us. What was abstract becomes real. We can feel, hear, and understand. Thus, we can say that the radio receiver is the embodiment of the radio waves.
In the same way, if there were only God Spirit in the universe and no Bible, God would be like the radio waves; we would not be able to reach Him or find Him. But thank God because His word is here. That word is His embodiment. God Spirit is contained in the word. That is why the Lord Jesus said that His word is spirit. In the same way, we can say that the word in the Bible is the Spirit. To make this clearer, we can say that the Bible is the embodiment of the Spirit.
A. The Expression of God Spirit
Besides being the embodiment of God Spirit, the Bible is also the expression of God Spirit. God Spirit is expressed through the Bible as His embodiment. From the day you heard the gospel until today, how many times have you been moved by the Holy Spirit apart from the word of God? Probably very few times.
Almost every time we are moved by the Holy Spirit, it is through the word of God. The Holy Spirit never stirs us apart from the word. Sometimes it is through a verse you read in the Bible; sometimes by remembering a verse you read; sometimes through words that match the Bible in principle.
All these are words. Although you are moved by the Holy Spirit, in such cases it is hard to separate the Holy Spirit from the word. It is difficult to say whether you are moved by the word or by the Holy Spirit, because, at that moment, the Holy Spirit is in the word. The word is the embodiment and expression of the Holy Spirit.
Without a doubt, we admit that many times we may have the word without the Spirit. It is like having a radio without the radio waves. Obviously, this is vain. We admit that many people read the Word of God in vain. But it also happens many times that, when we open the Word of God even a little, the Holy Spirit comes. The Holy Spirit is in the word, and the word is the expression of the Holy Spirit.
In any case, it is difficult to be moved by the Holy Spirit without the word of God. In other words, it is rare to be moved by the word without the inner moving of the Holy Spirit. Under normal circumstances, one cannot separate God Spirit from the Bible, since the Bible is the embodiment and expression of God Spirit.
Please note that [the Bible] is the embodiment of God Spirit, and not the embodiment of the Holy Spirit. This means that the Spirit is God and that God is the Spirit.
B. The Dwelling Place of God Spirit
The Bible as the embodiment of God Spirit is not only His expression but also His dwelling place. God Spirit dwells in His word. From our experience, we know this is true. Many times, when we read the Bible, we touch God Spirit. This happens because the Bible is the dwelling place of God Spirit. It is the place where God Spirit resides.
C. The Instrument of God Spirit
There is yet another aspect. The Bible is the instrument of God Spirit. Everything He does for us is through the Bible. Everything God does concerning us and everything He wants us to do is done through His word. The word is the embodiment of God Spirit. Therefore, it is also the expression, the dwelling place, and the instrument of God Spirit. Under normal circumstances, whenever we touch the word in the Bible, we should receive, touch, and sense the moving of God Spirit, and we should contact God Himself.
This is the Bible. What is the Bible? The Bible is the word of God, the revelation of God, the breath of God, and the embodiment of God Spirit.
